Understanding VoIP Phone Service

Upon answering a phone, all of the voice or data communication between the two users is transmitted to the link created by the voice gateways at both end; this link is referred to as a virtual pathway; audio and data communication travel through this channel through a series of sound to wave and wave to sound conversion process. Starting with converting the caller’s audio signal to digital, the virtual path compresses the digital signals into packs tagged with the receiver’s voice gateway address before sending it through the internet. When the packages get to the destination voice gateway, the digital signals are converted back to audio.

Types of VoIP Phone Service

There are three VoIP phone options you can choose from whenever you want to come on-board the service. They are:

– PC based Softphone

– Dedicated VoIP Phone

– Analog Telephone Adapter

PC based Softphones –

Today, there are PCs that are VoIP compliant; such PCs allow for the installation of software programs that run as VoIP Softphones; this means you don’t need any hardware. Once the software is installed on your system, they work just like regular hardware phones with screen displays of soft button panels for you to dial numbers whenever you want to make a call; but to make calls, your PC must be connected to the internet as the VoIP service provider utilizes internet telephony infrastructures for routing calls between Softphones (PC-to-PC); phone to PC calls could also be made but most times, extra charges apply. To enhance your call experience with PC Softphones, you would need quality headsets with good recognition systems to provide you and the recipient at the other end crisp audio.

Dedicated VoIP Phone –

These phones are the replica of conventional cellular phones; you don’t need an adapter or a computer; the phone connects directly with an IP network through an Ethernet port, cable or Wi-Fi. The IP network is provided by a VoIP service provider who routes your call via the network to the recipient’s phone. VoIP phones support the SIP format for transmitting multimedia file extensions like voice data and video calls through an IP network; it is the reason these phones are also called SIP phones. Moreover, you would be able to run every SIP based applications including video conferencing, online gaming and streaming as well as instant messaging on them; they come with exciting features like LCD screens, wireless network hardware and voice mail functions and voice quality adjustments.

Analog Telephone Adapter –

This option requires that you have a couple of hardware components including Analog Telephone Adapters (ATA), an Ethernet port, a RJ11 phone hack, your phone and your PC. To set the system up, connect your telephone adapter to the Ethernet port at one end and at the other end connect a RJ11 phone jack; with the jack you can link analog phones to VoIP phones. With the Analog Telephone System set up come all the benefits attached to a VoIP system.
